What is a rain garden? It is a garden built in a shallow depression designed to capture and infiltrate runoff from roofs, driveways and hardscapes. Rain gardens replenish the aquifer, reduce flooding and stream pollution. John Church, U of I Extension will teach you why rain gardens are an increasingly important component of home landscapes. Roger Bannerman, Wisconsin DNR will talk you through the how and where of designing and building a rain garden for your home landscape. Native plant enthusiast Mary Jo Murphy will discuss plants best suited for this purpose.
After the seminar, plan to take a short drive to visit the demonstration rain garden at the corner of Peck Rd. and Rt. 38 in St. Charles. U of I Extension Master Gardeners will be there to show you the construction process, and tell you about the soils and plants.
Have more questions beyond rain gardens? Residents of Kane County can receive free, one-on-one consultations with University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener volunteers about plant diseases, pest control, lawn care, and flower and vegetable gardening. Master Gardeners will be available to answer your questions. You may stop in the office and leave a sample or leave a message at 630-584-6166 ext. 23 and a Master Gardener will get back to you.
