Beacon News: Gardenology & Geneva Green Market

The Geneva Green Market was highlighted in a Beacon News in an article by Janet Zohorsky featuring the Gardenology event this Saturday, May 15, 2010:

The Geneva Green Market and many of its local farmers and suppliers will also have a large presence during the day — from Erehwon Farms (set up at Inglenook Pantry) to Heritage Prairie Market (located at Scentimental Gardens), who grow and sell local produce. Geneva Green Market will have a booth on the Courthouse lawn, to talk about local foods, and will invite children to plant a seed cup. If you want to branch out from only growing tomatoes, try potatoes. Donna Askins from Elgin Community Garden Network will talk about growing your own potatoes — at 1 and 2 p.m. at the Geneva History Center.

Fill your Thanksgiving table with Local Food by Deborah Pankey, Food Section, Daily Herald 11/18/09

Karen Stark has a challenge for all suburbanites: eat only locally produced meats, grains, fruits and vegetables this Thanksgiving.

It certainly sounds like a daunting task until Stark, a Geneva mom and coordinator of the town’s winter farmers market, explains that within a 100-mile radius of the ‘burbs you can find farmers raising free-range turkeys and beef, growing sweet potatoes and pumpkins and milling flour for biscuits and pie crusts. Cast the net a little wider and you can enjoy wild rice from Minnesota and cranberries from Wisconsin bogs and chestnuts from Michigan. (read more)  …”Give thanks for food”.

seasons on henrys farmTerra Brockman was raised in central Illinois, where four generations of her family have farmed. Terra’s younger brother, Henry, grows 650 varieties of vegetables on about 12 acres (between Peoria and Bloomington). There, he and his family with apprentices have bucked the traditional agribusiness conventional wisdom by farming in a way that’s sensible, sustainable and focused on producing healthy, nutritious food that doesn’t damage the land.

Terra Brockman tells the story of her family and their life on the farm in the form of a year-long memoir that takes the reader through each season of life on the farm.

If I cook frozen turkey do I need a power drill to put the meat thermometer in?

If I cook from frozen do I have to use a power drill to put the meat thermometer in?
Great question but way ahead of the class! Hey! I’m Renee Ferguson and just to let you know I’ve handled America’s turkey trauma for over 15 years! And, yes, that is a real question I answered and one that I will let you know about as we get closer to T-Day.

Having worked for the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line, I’ve answered many frazzled cooks questions. So I am here at the Community Winter Market, November 21, 2009 to guide you to a successful and less stressful Thanksgiving Day turkey. Even if you know your way around a drumstick there are questions to be answered and this Turkey Lady will do her best to help you become your own Holiday Hero.

The big question at this point in the game in early November is does size really matter. Well for sure! If you want to have ample portions but little or no leftovers plan on 1 pound per person. If you want to savor delicious turkey sandwiches the next day, or you have plans for some scrumptious casseroles in the days ahead you better plan on 1 ½ pounds of turkey per person. Sounds like a lot well think about this you’ve got to remember you are not buying a boneless, skinless cut of meat. The overall weight when you buy a turkey includes bones, packaging, giblets and something called drip weight. So plan ahead and buy 1 ½ pounds per person you can always freeze your leftovers for another day.

I invite you to visit my website at TurkeyTools.com if you need to Talk Turkey to Me or pick up your copy of my cookbook, Talk Turkey to Me, at Inglenook Pantry, 11 North 5th Street, Geneva IL on your next trip to the Community Winter Market. Find out why the FOOD NETWORK featured me as a turkey expert in a Throwdown! with Bobby Flay!

Curds and Whey: Local Artisan Cheese & Fresh Mozzarella

Everyone from cheese connoisseurs to parents shopping for string cheese for the kids will enjoy Curds and Whey Cheese Company. The owner of Curds and Whey, Rob Murphy, sells his cheese primarily at Inglenook Pantry, which is located on 11 North 5th Street in downtown Geneva, and this is Rob’s third season at the Geneva Green Market. Along with carrying Sassy Cow’s organic milk, Rob also provides some of the best cheeses, most of which are produced locally. Rob seeks out small artisan cheese makers and brings spectacular cave-aged cheeses to the market every week. Be sure to ask him what new types of cheeses he has each week.

Now that the growing season is underway, fresh mozzarella is cropping up everywhere. Fresh mozzarella is not just for tomatoes. Curds and Whey carries several different shapes of fresh mozzarella that can be put into salads or rolled with prosciutto and peppers.
