Home-grown in Kane County Found at the Geneva Green Market
In April of 2007 a group came together to form the Geneva Green Market, Not for Profit Group, a 501 (c) 3 that is devoted to education of the health-giving nature of locally grown food, sustainability and conservation of resources.
Local farmers offering locally grown food from within a 200-mile radius. Diverse arrays of products are offered, from organic baked good to free range eggs, hormone-free beef, pork, lamb, chicken, flowers, seasonally vegetables and raw/artisan cheeses. Free cooking demos and kid’s educational events.
When: June 4, 2009 through end of October 2009, every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: 75 N. River Lane, Geneva IL
“Green,” as used in our context means all the food grown within 200 miles of Geneva (Home-grown) in Kane. Freshness is the main reason, along with the nutritional value. When you eat organically, there are more sources of minerals in the soil and it is alive with micro-organisms. We have vegetable farmers that grow food with organic practices, but are not certified. (“Certified organic” can be a whole separate article.) We have some using IPM practices (Integrated Pest Management).
Questions know your farmer to know your food?
• What kind of vegetable is this?
• When was this vegetable picked?
• How do you cook this?
• Location of the farm?
• Do you use IPM, organic practices, or conventional?
• How do you keep you land sustainable?
Join the GGM, NFP membership and participate in the evening lectures that are workshops to exchange ideas from how to plant seeds to how to preserve the food we grow and purchase..

This year we have increased our vegetable farmers by 100%, so we will have variety!!!

Sounds great… but I have a job so will never be able to visit on a Thursday morning. Any chance you will ever do this on and evening or weekend, outside traditional work hours?
We are open at 7 in the morning, and most farmers are setting up around 6 am. If you can get there that early, I know they will sell to you! Bring a cooler with an icepack to keep your vegetables fresh when you get home in the evening (and the best assortment is always available in the morning). Another option is always signing for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). One of the best websites is LocalHarvest.com
